A Milestone. For Me.

This week marked a new milestone in Camia's life. Well, not really hers yet, but more so for myself. After scouring Craigs List for quite some time, mostly sporadically, but sometimes religiously for a twin size bed for her, I found one that was absolutely darling. See? Absolutely darling.
What not so darling about it was the price tag. 1,200 bucks??!! Well, darling though I love you so very much, I cannot afford a bed that costs 1,200 bucks. Since the ad said brand new mattresses included, I figured that she was really after the money for the mattresses. I had never heard of cafe kid before, so I really had no idea what this bed was worth. Still, I have found a place for it in my heart since I discovered it yesterday. So, I emailed the lady and asked for just the frame and how much would that cost. She said 'make me an offer'. I dislike when that happens. In my mind I wanted to pay no more than $100 to $150 for a bed. Less is better, but no more. So, off went my email offering this to the lady. If emails could laugh - you know, like the harry potter letters in the movies - then the return email would have not ONLY laughed, it would have scoffed too. She stated that she was selling the frame and throwing in the mattresses as a bonous. I dislike when that happens too. So, back to the drawing board. I went on Cafe Kid's website to see what the prices were brand new, but none were listed. I then heard that they were similar to Pottery Barn Kids. Well, I have found a place for them in my heart too. But they are expensive as well. A bed similar to the one above is on sale for $700. Truth be told, I actually considered it. In my head. If I had considered it out loud, Ryan would have immediately taken my head from the clouds and put it back on my shoulders. It's a good thing at least one of us is sensible when it comes to having a little girl ;). This morning, while perusing the thrift store, I received a call from a friend saying that there was a Cafe Kid bed at Costco for $400. Or something like that. It might have been $500. or $4 hundredsomething. Tempting. But, to be smart and at least pursue all options, I headed to the furniture part of the thrift store. And look at what I found:
Headboards. For $30. While they are not for a twin bed, which was what I was looking for, I scored on a single, which is also perfect. I plan to have them sanded and then painted an antique white. I plan to adjust Camia's new quilt to fit a single rather than a twin. I plan to paint her room a light, girly pink. I plan to get a nightstand for her on which to place the lamp I bought and plan to 'fix up'. $30. Sure beats $1,200, $700 and even $4hundredsomething! And now my baby has a head board and a foot board. Someday soon she will have a new bed and no longer be in a crib. And in less than 6 months she is going to be 3. Time sure seems to get away on me sometimes!

A chuckle or two

In the last week I have had 2 memorable chuckles caused by what little people have said to me. While Ryan was shaving his face on Saturday last week, Camia was watching and asked ever so innocently ' daddy, are you cutting your chin off?' It went in the 'books'.

Today I called my sister in law Joy and talked to her daughter Genoa on the phone. After some little chit chat, I asked if her mom was home. 'Yes', she said, 'she is basically always home.' 'Oh,' I said. 'Always, home, hey?'. Genoa responded ever so curtly 'I didn't say always. I said basically always.' Definitely a smile there. :)

Snow!.....??

We had snow. Overnight we got dumped on. Almost 1/2 a foot lay on the ground when we woke in the morning. We - and by we, I mean I - were a little disappointed that it started melting right away. In an effort to preserve it, to make it last a little longer, I decided to construct a snowman. But, it melted almost as fast as the snow on the ground.
And, I did go snowboarding. My sister has a couple pictures on her camera, but I made it out with no broken bones. Bruises, but no broken bones. I have no idea how this happened, and didn't feel it until I took my snow pants off. It's on the inside of my leg, but it could have happened any time since I spent most of my first run down not on my feet.
As soon as I treated it like wake boarding, I kinda got the hang of it, and by my 10th run down, I only fell twice. It rained all day, but I didn't really notice it going down until the last run, when it was coming down pretty good. We noticed it when we were on the lift. Then it was cold. We both got wet to the skin and were thankful that there was a fireplace with which to warm ourselves. After going once, I think I like it better than skiing and would definitely go again. One day :)

Creative juices...

Since I was taking a break from cleaning, I decided that I should do something creative. Tonight I am going to a card making night with a few ladies from the church, so I had to make and prepare a card for that. I have a recent obsession - love - for owls, so I decided to use that for my card.
I also have been seeing block letters in blog land and thought they were the coolest thing. So, I went to the greenhouse, cut up some scrap wood, painted them, distressed the, and made some of my own. I was originally going to put these above the kitchen sink on a shelf, but I find them very inspiring on my computer desk in my craft room. I must say, I do quite love them.

Organized Chaos -Day 7

Onto Day 7. The pantry. Since I usually keep this organized already and for the most part know what's in it, I skipped day 7. And Day 8, the coat closet. And Day 9, the toy closet since I did that on day 6. And Day 10, the laundry room since I did that when we got rid of the cupboards some time ago. And Day 11, the freezer. I already keep inventory of what's in my freezer and am in the midst - again - of a freezer cleanse. So, that brings us to Day 12. The medicine. Which I did on Day 5, I believe. My goal for this week is to organize Camia's baby clothes and put them in storage. Currently they are under our bed, in her closet and in the shed. I bought totes for 6-12, 12-18, 18-24 and size 2. This way when we have another girl, I can grab a tote at each stage instead of looking through all the boxes they are in now to determine what I have and don't have. I also currently have 4 big boxes for the vv boutique, which I am both ashamed and proud of. Ashamed because I have that much useless stuff and proud because I pulled it out of the cracks and holes in my house to make it tidy and organized - and you can tell. Once you look in my cupboards, closets and drawers. :)

Organized Chaos -Day 6

Day 6's task was to clean out the dresser drawers. Day 6 was sometime last week. I had this post written but ended up just saving and not publishing due to computer issues. And then forgot about it. So, yes, I am still around. And still cleaning.

Since I was feeling ambitious on Day 3, I got mine and Camia's dresser drawers cleaned out and tidied then. So, instead I decided to tackle the 'storage' - aka junk - closet instead. And the toy closet. And the left over laundry.. And washing the floors since the mop I am borrowing was being returned last Friday. And cleaned the bathrooms. And play with Camia. And de-Christmas-ify. And wow. What a day.

I switched the toy closet and junk closet around and we are going to install shelving units to hold the toys so Camia can better access it. The original toy closet just was not working. I had imagined Camia one day playing in the closet like little children like to do...or apparently not... but every time any child ever played in it, it just got turned upside down as the toys were not THAT easily accessible. So, I packed some toys away for toy rotation, and put a bunch in the box for donation. Anything that was randomness got tossed in the box. We plan to put shelves in the closet to make toys easier to get at and help keep it organized. I plan on labelling all the containers to keep toys where they belong as well. Can you imagine it? A couple shelves, no stacking of containers.....I can see it :)
And the junk closet? No longer a junk closet. It's now the vacuum closet, broom closet and a few misc things like my fondue pot and waffle maker. All of which were in the junk closet before. But now there is no junk in the closet :).
Ive since bought a container for the rags since Superstore had a sale on containers. And, instead of having my food processor in its original box that was getting crushed and wrecked under a pile of junk in the junk closet, I put it in a container as well. It's behind all the stuff, under the stairs since I rarely use it but still think I need it. Since I got my Kitchen Aid, I rarely use it anymore. I enjoy chopping my veggies by hand, so that's what I usually do anyways. The only thing I actually do with it these days is donate it to the school when they need it.

Organized Chaos -Day 5

After taking Friday and Saturday off, today my task resumed and I moved onto completing my Day 5 challenge: Cleaning under the kitchen sink. I do clean this area on a semi-regular basis, and sometimes I just find that the mess just kind of sneaks up on me and surprises me one morning. This morning I took all of the stuff out of the cupboard, cleaned it from top to bottom, and then put everything back. Except the stuff I won't/don't use. I containerized everything else and put it back. So, for now, it's clean again. For now :)
Since this task was easy-peasy, I decided to tackle another area of the kitchen that bugs me every time I look at it: The 'medicine' cupboard. I bought some baskets at the dollar store and put the medicines and vitamins in the basket, tossed the expired stuff, and put the basket in the cupboard.
Then, since I was feeling like I was on a roll, I also cleaned up my spice rack. I've been wanting to either toss it or find a new home for it for a while now so I could obtain more counter space that I seriously already lack in, so I used another basket purchased from the dollar store, put all my spices in it and put it in my spice cupboard.
See? More counter space! Every little bit counts!

A Day Off

Today's challenge was to tidy up the Linen Closet. That is another area that requires no cleaning since I already keep it organized. Although, when I did a quick through I found a blanket that belongs to someone else, so I will be returning that soon. So, I decided to do nothing. 3 days in a row of some major cleaning is enough. Instead, I made a little something to house Camia's growing collection of hair clips. I used supplies on hand, so today this project cost me nothing. The frame is from the maser closet that I cleaned out yesterday. The fabric is left-over from her new quilt.
One day this will match her room. When I have it all together. I still have it hanging on the wall. I was trying to pursue a dresser with a hutch off Craigs List for her room, but I think it's been sold as it's been deleted by the author. Back to the drawing board! In the meantime, I am making the accessories :).

Something Other Than Organizing...

On a completely separate note, life is still going on while the de-cluttering and organizing is happening. This morning Camia and I did crafts - after she slept until almost 11 (she woke up at 6 and Ryan brought her to me in bed. We fell asleep after Ryan left for work, I woke up at 9 -ish and Camia rolled out of bed at almost 11. - and last week Ryan surprised me and brought me home this jewelry box. I love it, because now when I want a necklace I don't have to untangle any knots to get it!

Organized Chaos -Day 3

Today's Challenge was to clean up the Tupperware closet. Since I already keep my tupperware organized enough to determine what's what, I decided to tackle the master bedroom closet instead, since that place is another dumping ground of mine. I didn't take any photo's of before, but here are some of the after-math
and the stuff I pulled out of there.I am sure you can imagine what it looked like before. Now, I need to go clean the pile of 'junk' up. I am feeling so inspired, I might tackle something else yet to today!

Organized Chaos -Day 2

So apparently I have a few more than just 3 junk drawers and 2 junk piles.

Today's challenge involved cleaning off the surface of the computer desk. I thought, sure! No problem. It'll be done so quick and easy that I can also clean the other 2 surfaces in my spare room too. Well, once I started I kind of felt overwhelmed. So I started backing up my photo's to discs for fear of future disaster where I might loose them all. While I waited for discs to format and then files to copy, I started chipping away at the desk. What a stuff we had squirreled away. Some of has been laying there since my friend's wedding that occurred 2 + years ago! I am feeling like a slob right about now. After about 3 hours, I have 1 huge pile for recycling, a bag of garbage, a pile for value village to add to yesterday's purge and a clean desk! Here is a before shot:
And a couple after shots:
I didn't think to take a photo with the doors open until I emptied the cupboard, but the amount of stuff we had stored away in there is rather embarrassing. Piles of cd randomness. A stack of 7 packs of lined paper. A pile - or rather, piles - of sticky notes that Camia has disassembled. Now there is a basket for the stickies, a basket for the pencil lead and cords and a few other 'all sorts' that I decided was worthy enough to keep. For now. hee hee.
I do want to get either a tray of baskets or 2 baskets, one for the pile of scrap paper I kept for Camia's doodling and the other for my Epicure things I like to keep on hand when I have either a phone order or I quick need something when I am doing order entry. Otherwise I think for now I am done this table. And I think I might need a day 3 & 4 for this challenge to tidy up the other 2 surfaces that badly need tidying.

Organized Chaos -Day 1

While wandering around in blog land today, I stumbled across a blog that talks of Organization!, something which I sometimes let fall to the way-side. I do good for a little while, and then fall back into a slump, and it's hard to get on top of it again and when I look around I feel so overwhelmed. I am amazed at how much stuff we have squirreled away in our little townhouse every time I open a drawer or have to think of where something might be. This blog seems to be about organization and for the month of January - excluding Sundays is running a 21 day challenge where 1 thing a day is tidied, cleared of all randomness and purged of all the junk. I am 3 days behind the starting point since I just found the blog today, but I decided to go ahead and start at Day 1 anyways.

DAY 1 - GETTING ORGANIZED CHALLENGE - CLEAN UP THAT JUNK DRAWER!

Yikes. I had 3 drawers and 2 pile places. So I cleaned them all. Here is one of my junk drawers before
And after
I was so proud of myself! Ryan has been looking for a tool box/chest since Father's Day last year, so I put all the tools and hardware stuff in the shed with all the other tools and hardware stuff. The other drawers also look like this, and house extension cords and candles in one and coasters and XBOX stuff in the other. And I purged, for sure I did! I am motivated for tomorrow's challenge, which is clear off the computer desk and/or any other surface that may need tiding.
This week I have designated to be a stay at home week. Except tomorrow afternoon. Otherwise I will be home, catching up on housework, and re-doing what I did last week. You know, to keep it up and that sort of thing. I don't really have any major sewing projects that I feel like getting done or working on this week, but I just got 100+ photo's developed at Costco that I might think about scrapping. Key word: think. I might not do it...I will think about it :). This week at some point other than before bed, I hope to read my book. I am in the middle of such a good book right now and am at a climax, it's hard to put down. "The Forgotten Garden" by Kate Morton is fascinating to say the least. The language used and the fairy tales entwined grab my attention and it's so easy to get lost in it, to feel like you're living the story standing from a vantage point. You can see and hear what is happening, but you are only watching rather than getting involved.

Next week I planned a day trip with my sister - a person who I rarely see, it seems with our conflicting schedules - and I am looking forward to it. We plan to go to Hemlock and take in a day of snowboarding. Or, if I grow feathers, loose 4 of my toes to exhibit 3 sharp pointed toes on each foot, and perhaps switch from speaking fluent English to full time chicken-ese, I might just wind up skiing since I have done that before. Waaaaaay back when....Like, 3 years ago! I skied for the first time when I was 4 months pregnant with Camia, and haven't been back since. We plan to go on Thursday because then women ski for free and rentals are half price.

In my last post I said I would talk more of Camia's constant developing habits. She is still definitely changing. Her sentences are complete, and very clear and concise. She loves to read and has picked up a habit of saying things like 'this is mine' and then adding 'go get your own' to that. She has become a bit bossy and demanding, and we are hoping that with constant attention and discouragement it will eventually cease. Or at least not get worse. She has once again slipped into the picky, lazy eater category, this seems to come and go with her. Right now we have a hard time getting her to eat more than 3 or 4 bites of things that used to be her favourite foods. We have begun to disallow snacking as we thought this might contribute to her appetite, or lack there-of. Though a few people have suggested that we make her sit on her chair until she is done or feed her her cold meal when she asks for a snack, Ryan and I feel this is cruel punishment and does nobody any good since if we make her sit on her chair we listen to her whine until she eats the last mouthful and if we try to make her eat her cold leftovers, she absolutely refuses to eat anything at all. Perhaps this is a sign that she has us wrapped around her little finger and that she gets her own way far too often, but constantly fighting with her to get her to eat is very tiring and gets to the point where we get frustrated with her and possibly with each other. As long as she gets her 4 bites in or eats her protein and a couple bites of veggies, we are happy.

She is a worse toddler than she was an infant in that when she was an infant she let us get a full night's sleep. Now that is a rare occurrence and treasured when it happens. She wakes up anywhere in between 2 and 4 or 5 times a night, sometimes every hour on the hour. And all she wants is a hug. Or her stuffy, who is laying right beside her. Or to go visit the washroom. We have been kind of working on having her dry overnight. She started a trend on her own by staying dry 4 nights in a row and has since fallen into a slump. I am not stressing over it, I kinda don't really care. We have a deal that if she stays dry at night she can watch a movie in the morning. If she is wet well, then, she doesn't. Sometimes she is upset at this, but she understands the concept, which I find really different than when we started training her during the day around 9 months or so ago. She is completely dry during the day now for a couple months, it's been a long time since she's had a day-time accident. Ryan and I miss the consistent, constant 12 hour nights she did when she was itty bitty. Most times I don't hear her when she wakes during the night, so Ryan ends up getting her, but sometimes, like last night, I hear her and I get up 4 times to go tend to her. Finally last night at the last time, I walked into her room, said that was enough, that I didn't want to hear anymore and for her to go to sleep. I didn't hear from her again until Ryan left for work, when he brought he to me.

She has a bit of attitude lately and when we say no to her for what ever reason, she gets downright upset and will whine 'but I NEED it!!!' Or cries for what she wants at that moment for a long moment. She has had many time-outs because of this and sits in her room for a little while to sort her thoughts.

Even though she is a polite child, she can still be demanding so we are currently working on instead of saying 'i want ____', she should say 'can I please have ___'

When she coughs I would ask her is she was 'ok there' so now she says 'I ok there' herself. She also folds her arms and says 'I angry'. I ask 'Why, what happened' she says 'I just angry, I need to cry.' Finally after her saying this after I discipline her or not let her have her way, I told her that me getting angry is much worse than her getting angry so she should just stop. She didn't know quite what to do with that. One time she started fake crying, I asked her what was wrong, she said 'I happy'. I asked why she was crying and she said 'I happy. I just need to cry.'

Despite the challenges we have with a 2.5 year old, we also have fun moments too. We do crafts, we play play-dough and we go for walks to the park. We have full conversations, we pretend to eat cookie dough and drink coffee off a plate and build towers only to knock them down and then have a good laugh. We take her new wooden dolls 'swimming' and to parties and we take the train down the tracks all the way through London and back. We build tunnels, read stories and eat popcorn. We bake real cookies, eat real cookie dough, colour pictures and talk on 'phones' to our friends. We have tickle fights and chase each other - or I chase her - down the halls. We share hugs and kisses and sometimes even snuggle time. Having a 2.5 year old is fun, and sometimes looking past the difficult time to see the good and fun times is not always easy which is why I am convinced is the reason God made children so beautiful. So they can look up at us, melt our hearts and make us forget all the bad things they've ever done for a split enough second to have us change our minds about how mad we are at that very moment. Camia's thing is that she looks at me when I've disciplined or gotten upset and says 'I want a hug'.

He vocabulary is getting quite extensive in that she says things like 'watch, Mom, watch' or when she tries on new clothes she says 'what do you think, Mom?' I say, 'I don't know, what do you think?' She says 'Hmm, it's cute!'. Or she comes up behind me, wraps her arms around me and says 'I love you so much'. She makes me laugh when she says 'see you babe' as either I or Ryan walk out the door and tells Ryan to 'have a good day' when he leaves for work. When I have drank her 'coffee' off a plate, she asks if I 'want some more'. If it doesn't fix itself, we might need to work on pronunciation because she says things like 'chicken' for 'kitchen', 'bracker ' for 'cracker' and 'waf waf' for 'waffle' - which, by the way, she can down almost 3 4x4 waffles for breakfast. Her 'L's' are currently 'W'. Her name is Cawia, not Camia, so sometimes her 'M's' - not always, in fact I can't even think of another example - are 'L's' too.

Since Christmas she has been playing so well on her own, and I feel like I have moments where I can breath, read my book or do the dishes in peace, since she is either demanding my attention, asking me to play with her or talking my ears off.

We went for a walk after church on Sunday and stopped at the park for a moment. While Ryan and Camia ran off and played with the toys, I sat on the saucer swing and watched. I felt so relaxed and it was so quiet that I could have had either my journal or my book. She loves the park so much. She always gets so upset when we leave to go home.

Camia is a bit of a social butterfly and wants to be involved in everything. She sees kids and will go play in a heart beat. But her bossiness gets in the way sometimes and the fact that she is little also sets her back some too since the bigger kids want her to go away and not play with their toys for fear that she might break something. She has also gotten the notion that now she doesn't have to share her toys either, and that everything is hers. We are working on sharing again and not saying 'mine'. I know she is 2.5, but I believe that using that as an excuse and letting it go does not help her. I feel that we may as well nip it in the bud now before it's too late and it has gone on for too long.

Since I have taken all morning to type away during dishes, laundry, tidying and paying attention to Camia, I should sign off and give my daughter who says 'Mommy, I hungry' and 'I want milk quease (please)' lunch and a cup.
