Baptism

Today our Mr Man was baptised. What a great blessing to be able to do this in freedom, and what a comfort to know that this, our son, is a child of God. I got a little choked up when I thought of the symbolism, that all his sins are forgiven and washed away with the blood of Christ.

After baptism, we had a photo shoot with family. My Oma made this blanket, and it was important to me that we use it for his baptism. She made one for Camia too. We ended up forgetting the blanket at home, and had my sister get it for us so we could use it. These are my grandparents on my mom's side.

brotherly-sisterly love

I know it won't always be this perfect, I thought to catch the moment while it lasted :)

Baby Feet

Recently I got sucked into the world of Pinterest, the place where everyone's house is decorated perfectly, crafts turn out always beautiful and smart people hang out. I saw an idea there that I wanted to do when my baby was born. For my Christmas tree, baby's first ornament. For the first time I am glad that people have Christmas stuff out, even if is only September and even if Haloween hasn't happened yet. I went to Michaels, picked up the necessary items and tried it. This is what I came up with...things never turn out like they do in the picture...but I still think it's pretty stinkin cute :). Love baby feet!

Snuggles with Oma on Sunday

The past 2 weeks...

I have a moment. And I feel pretty good. And my baby is sleeping. And my little girl is playing nicely. I have a moment :).

It's been 2 weeks since little Caleb joined our little family. He has been a happy baby, and despite the frequent feedings, we have been managing to get a little bit of sleep, enough to function and have the ability to know whether we are coming or going. Camia came home almost a week ago, last Sunday night, and though sometimes it's been a challenge, she has been a great helper. We have already noticed thateven though she doesn't say as much, she already tries to fight for our attention. And it's not always in the positive way. She is wanting us to feed her, or carry her, or is suddenly unable to do things that before she was, like bedtime. She comes out more frequently and has forgotten how to tuck herself back into bed. I am hoping that this is short term and things will smooth out a bit more as time goes on and Caleb gets older and doesn't need to be fed every hour during the day.

Caleb does wonderful at night, sleeping 4-5 hour stretches, which leaves me feeling like I have a bit of energy, even if it means going to bed at 9 or 10 to catch some z's before his next feeding. Usually he is down by 12:30-1, sleeps till 4-ish, feeds for 20 minutes and then is down again until 8, or whenever Camia graces us with her presence. This time I am also grateful that so far nursing has been going great. In his first week we supplemented once or twice a day, just so he would not feed every half hour, leaving me exhausted and drained - literally. We haven't used formula in about a week now. I don't think I am producing whipped cream, though, because it takes a bit for him to get a good feed to last him enough to get a good sleep. He is awake a good portion of the day, taking about 30 minute cat naps a few times. Even though he is only 2 weeks old, he seems to like crashing at around 2 ish and sleeping until around 6, which is perfect for meal times - if we're on time :)

Another huge blessing is that we have been swamped with meals from our church and friends. To the point where I have started saying no thanks, since our fridge and both our freezers are overflowing. For me this is huge, since when we had Camia that support was not there, and I remember feeling diappointed since we had just had a new baby and we were newer members at our church. Since then I started making meals for new Mom's, because it was the one thing I would have loved when I had a new baby. It is different to be on the receiving end, but it's been the greatest blessing for us at this time.

If there was anything worth remembering from Caleb's birth, it was that all his details are the same as Camia's, which I find neat. They were both 8.1, both 21 inches long. Both labours took 27 hours, and both were born on a Thursday. Camia was born at 7:26 in the morning and Caleb was born at 7:06 at night. Their dates are almost the same, Camia was born on the 5th, Caleb the 6th, even if they were different months (June and September). The biggest difference was that Caleb decided to be different in that he decided to be born via c-section after 27 hours of labour. He made a statement by being in the 0.2% of births and be face-presenting. My midwife has delivered 100's of babies and she had never seen this before. I told her that Caleb didn't want to be forgotten. She will always remember us. :)

The last 2 weeks have been a bit of a challenge for me in that while I am normally a very independent person, I have had to rely on others for everything. I was pretty much imobile the first week, the pain was quite bad. Tylenol didn't relieve the pain, just made it tolerable. I was afraid to leave the hospital because if my stitches tore I was right there where someone could help me. If I got infection, I could have the help I needed there. On the other hand, I was done being in the hospital. The bed was way too uncomfortable. I wanted to be home to settle into routine, and be home with my little family. In the end, Camia ended up staying with my mom for over a week because I didn't have the strength or energy to have her home. I didn't feel too bad because I knew that she was having loads of fun and my mom was enjoying it just as much, if not more than Camia was. It worked out well when she came home, because Ryan went to work again the next day, so I still had a helper, which she has been very good at. There were a couple times where I fell apart, the first being a little more than 24 hours after Caleb's birth. I had no time to mentally prepare myself for c-section since a half hour after I was told I went under the knife. I was upset that it ended in c-section, it was the last thing I wanted. I was upset that I was suddenly immobil. I was upset that I couldn't change my baby's diaper or give him a bath or get things for myself. I was upset that I needed assistance to visit the restroom. To take a shower. To get dressed. I had a great nurse, though, who basically forced me out of bed on Friday night. She made me get up, made me visit the restroom, made me take a shower and made me do it by myself besides setting out towels, my shampoo, soap and clothes.

All in all, we have been blessed again and again, and are thankful for the communion of saints and a strong connection between friends and family. Even though it did not end in the way we had hoped or expected, we are thankful to God that there is technology that our son could be born after a natural birth was deemed impossible. We are especially thankful to God that Caleb is healthy and suffered no trauma and was not affected by the way he was born. And we are thankful that so far my healing has been going smoothly and infection-free.

The best part about having a newborn so far is the cheeky grins we get from him and the silent giggles he has while dreaming.

Introducing...

The lastest addition to our little family. We are thankful that after 27 hours of labour, a dramatic C-Section, a 6 hour visit to the NICU and a 4 day stay in the hospital, we could be home with our new love, Caleb Tony. Here is a little teaser photo for starters. Perhaps in the next few days I will have more energy to post more...

Late Night Thoughts

Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I stay up and think of you...

Cause I'm dreaming of you tonight
Till tomorrow, I'll be holding you tight...

I just want to hold you close
But so far all I have is dreams of you...

So I wait for the day....to say
How much I love you

2 days overdue. Almost every night I wake at the same time, 2 am. Sometimes I can sleep again in a half hours time. Other times, like today, I am awake 2 hours later. After tossing and turning for around an hour, I get up. Today I made a cup of tea. I read a Christian blog I follow. I find words to write in my little space. Perhaps it is my body preparing for late night feedings. Perhaps it is anxiety over what is yet to come. Last night I went to tuck Camia in before I met my pillow for the night. I was overcome with emotion over her sleeping beauty and innocence. I was overcome with emotion for how things are going to be changing soon. I tell myself that change is good. And that this will all be over soon. I tell myself that soon we will hold our new little person in our arms. We will marvel at his/her beauty, because even if there are imperfections, everyone is created in the image of God. When I watch Camia sleep, or play I often just can't help but stare at her in amazement, that she came from nothing and that God gave her to us.

I am looking forward to not being pregnant anymore. I am eager to hold our new little baby. I am scared of the changes. I am scared of loving a new little person. Even though people tell me that love multiplies, it does not divide and that I won't know what life was like without this little being after s/he makes his/her debut, I struggle with there being more than just the 3 of us. I struggle with there being more than just Camia and me during the days. I struggle with sharing my love, time and energy.

Then I think, because sometimes I process things too much, that this is a test for me. A test to learn to trust God. All things come from His hand. There is a saying out there which I have been telling myself, 'God does not give us anything we cannot handle.'. But, I read the other day somewhere that it wasn't that God doesn't give us more than we can handle, but that God gives us strength to handle all that He gives us. This made me stop and think. In my mind I think that I wouldn't be able to handle this, that or the other thing. Things like a severe handicap, and I get anxious whether or not this baby is healthy. But with this retake on a saying makes me think that if God does give us a child who needs more attention than a 'normal, healthy' child, then God will equip me with all that I need to raise this child to still fear His Name. I find it amazing how as Christians we take so much for granted that we will be blessed with healthy children. At least, I know I do anyways...

These days my books of choice are 'Respectable Sins' and 'Trusting God', both by Jerry Bridges. I am finding that sometimes when I read the former, I get a little discouraged because I see that everything I do is a sin in some form or other. Nothing I do is 'right' or 'perfect'. I shared this thought with Ryan and he was all like 'well, yeah...'. Thanks, Hun. But he is right. I am a sinner. I am constantly in need of forgiveness. It is overwhelming to think that when I think I am having a good day and I am doing nothing wrong, I still am, in fact, sinning and am in need of forgiveness. What an encouragement to know that I am saved by grace and that my sins were washed away with the shedding of Christ's blood.

I sat down the other week and made a list of goals for myself and even though they are things I really want, it is hard to carry them all through because of how easy it is to slip back into the old 'routine'. One of the things on the top of my list was to be more diciplined. If I want Camia to grow up knowing God and what it means to be a Christian wife, mother and sister in Christ, I need to pull up my socks and be a better example for her. I want her to be able to look at me and know that I loved her and did my best. I want her to be the best she can be for her future husband, if God so wills it. If we are blessed with a son, I want to set an example for him too when he looks for a wife. In saying this, I also want them to know that I am not perfect, that I am human and that I make mistakes. I want to be able to show them that when mistakes are made, it is ok to ask for forgiveness, even from your children. This is my prayer for me to be able to give my children. And I know that she is only 4 and that my next child is yet unborn. But they are most impressionable when then are young, this is when they learn. This is what sticks with them for life.

With that load off my chest, and now that I have been awake for almost 3 hours, I am going to crawl back into my bed at 5am for around 2 more hours of sleep before I get roused to start my day and make some 'breakwest' and have requests to go to the park or do some sort of craft or other or involve myself in some imaginary play.
