Yesterday a friend and I got together for a play date and a sewing a project together date. We'd been talking about sewing I Spy bags for our girls, and decided that there was no time like the present. This is my finished product.
I used up scraps from my scrap bucket and those silly little toys that everyone seems to have with no real purpose. I plan on developing a 5 x 7 picture, having it laminated so Camia can use a dry-erase marker to check off the things as she finds them (I put a pocket on the back for the picture with a separate pocket for the pen).
The backing is a soft, fluffy fabric that sheds like crazy when it's cut, so I had some clean up to do afterwards, but the end result was rewarding. Camia loves it and wants to use it as a pillow. We looked up tutorials online and found that we needed those beenie teddy things, so M went to Michales to buy some and I was blown away by how expensive they are! So, I headed to the VV Boutique in search of perhaps a pillow or something stuffed with said beads. I found pillows but they were filled with rice which had sharp points which could cause for some puncture holes in the plastic I Spy window or fabrics. Not cool. Plus, after I made the Boo Boo Buddy I found that rice just plain stank after a while. So, I found some unsuspecting dolls and a super cute frog which I thought of saving by stuffing with, well, stuffing after I de-beaded it but then thought of the plethora of stuffies Camia already has and heartlessly amputated it to get the beads from his fingers and toes. I saved the stuffing that was in him for future projects and threw the shell away. I think I might ask M to selvage it, though, because the fabrics will make some super cute quilted cards. Who am I kidding?? I already have so much crafting stuff...hmm, but it was cute...Anyways, while I have this discussion in my head, my fingers will go on to a more cute and funny thing that happened, an act put out by my daughter who says it like it is. As 'they' say...'out of the mouths of babes', right? :) I bought a couple of dolls who started out really cute - kind of -and now, after the fact, I am finding out that these dolls are selling for upwards of $25 on ebay. Oh well.
These dolls have a crazy amount of those beads in them. So, at $5 a piece, I bought them. And turned them into this.
Camia wanted to hold them in the car and was upset when I explained that she could not play with them, and that I was going to be doing the exact opposite of what I have been trying to teach her. She was appalled when I told her that I was going to be breaking them. She looked at me with a worried expression and said 'Mommy, the baby is sad. Can I hold him? I think he needs snuggles to make him feel better.' I am smiling just thinking of it. Her concern was admirable, like she thought the dolls knew just what was coming. The end result is a fun toy that Camia enjoys playing with and was relatively inexpensive. It costed about $7 and that was just for the beads. And it's something to keep her occupied when we head into a grocery store or drive anywhere - along with the books on cd I borrowed from the library (my newest best friend.)
